Purpose:
To provide postal addresses for a new residential development at Long Bennington
Decision:
That approval is granted for the following name in order to provide postal addresses for the new development at Vicarage Lane, Long Bennington:
SAXONWELL COURT
Reasons for the decision:
Development off Vicarage Lane, Long Bennington.
This is a small development of five new properties being built on land to the rear of Nos. 5 to 13 Vicarage Lane. The development will be accessed via a private driveway between Nos. 5 and 7 Vicarage Lane, which will require a new road name.
The developers suggested the name of SAXON COURT for this road naming, as they wish to use a name with an historic connection to the site or the village of Long Bennington. The village was the last place King Harold of Wessex camped before the Battle of Hastings and the village church is named after St. Swithun, who was chief advisor to Egbert, King of the West Saxons.
The Long Bennington Parish Council considered this suggestion but the members wished to propose the alternative name of BRETTEVILLE COURT.
This name is after the name of Bretteville L’Orgueilleuse, the French Village that Long Bennington is twinned with, as there is a strong link with the village and a very active twinning association.
The developers, whilst appreciating the Parish Council’s wish to use this name for road naming somewhere in the village, do not feel that the name is appropriate for their site. They would prefer to keep with a more traditional name and have proposed, instead, using the name of SAXONWELL COURT. This name retains Long Bennington’s link with the Saxon period and has a connection with the local churches, with Long Bennington, Allington and Sedgebrook churches all being part of ‘The Saxonwell Group’. It is also the name of the electoral ward for the area.
The Long Bennington Parish Council has no comments to make on this alternative suggestion and no further proposals for naming.
There is no conflict with any existing road name in the postal delivery area.
